Let SMEAD Help You Get Your Taxes Organized
I once hated April because it was tax time and it rained a lot. But I finally resolved to have the tax preparation done by a professional and thought that my responsibilities were lightened. Not so. The professional is only as good as the information you give them. And if you are smart you give them everything they may need in one fell swoop.
I didn’t do this; still don’t. I have to hunt up all sorts of information for our tax guy on the fly as he emails me about this possible deduction or that possible income source. Felt like the painful (to my pocketbook) experience was prolonged! Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pretty organized gal, but I’m busy. It’s hard to set up a system and stick with it all year long. But I do try and I get better each year.
This year will be different thanks to the SMEAD Tax Organizer. While I did have all the important information in one place – thank goodness – pulling it all apart and sorting by categories was going to be time consuming, but I used the Tax Organizer and it’s really rather fun.
The “pages” or tabs if you like, are open so you can use it to do a quick file of your paperwork, and then go back and simply pop into the pockets. It also has a printed checklist to use as a guideline for gathering tax documents. It comes with blank labels and pre-printed labels pertaining to taxes (i.e. IRA/SEP contributions, W-2’s from Employer, Real Estate Taxes, etc.) as well as instructions on how to use it on the inside cover. It also has a place to document what year the return is for and when you actually filed it. It is designed to fit into a file drawer or bookshelf. And it’s super easy to use.
Moving forward I will use the Jan-Dec Organizer for the monthly bills. It hold 900+ sheets, has 12 pockets preprinted with the months. It will be easy to peruse for additional deductions and will help me keep organized. Plus the SMEAD ORGANOMICS website is filled with some great articles to help you get started. They also have great checklists to use. This is a good article on getting your taxes preparation organized: http://www.smead.com/hot-topics/tax-advice-1381.asp. Be sure to check it out!
