When I started going through the book, Everything (Almost) in Its Place, by Alicia Rockmore and Sarah Welch, I knew this was the “get organized” book I’d been waiting for! For example, they introduce the concept of “Imperfect Organization,” which means that you can get more done by organizing less. When I read that, I thought to myself, “You mean I don’t have to be perfect or the most organized person on the planet?” Huge sigh of relief. In fact, here are three of the authors’ secrets to getting organized, all incredibly reassuring to me, someone who struggles to keep everything in place:

Secret #1: You don’t need to be perfect.
Secret #2: You don’t need to do everything on your lists.
Secret #3: You don’t need to do everything yourself.

Rockmore and Welch may be organizational experts — founders of Buttoned Up, Inc., a company devoted to helping women “tame the chaos” in their lives — but they freely admit that they weren’t always pros in the field of organization. Both have struggled with staying organized, often in different ways, but are representative of most mothers who seek perfection and end up feeling disillusioned with their lack of control over clutter.

Fortunately, the authors came up with some easy-to-implement strategies that help us get our families from point A to point B with a minimum of chaos, but still leave some time for rest and play. They share, for instance, how to set up a “control center,” how to put technology to work for you, and how to make an effective list system. Beyond the practical advice, they teach you how to drop the need for perfection, the guilt over not doing it all, and the stress over lack of control.
