Once the holidays are over, most people like to focus on getting things cleaned up and organized for the New Year. However, it can sometimes be difficult to have the motivation to get organized on your own. Personal commitments, hobbies, interests and family activities often eat into the time you’ve set aside for cleaning and organization tasks. In fact, it’s usually a lot easier to find an excuse to not clean than to just get the job done. If you sometimes have a difficult time getting and staying motivated and on-task with your organizational chores, why not get a bit of help? Pairing up with an “organizer buddy” is a great way for both of you to get more accomplished in a more enjoyable fashion. Here are some great tips you can use to help find and work with an organizer buddy for the New Year.

Choose Your Buddy Carefully

When choosing an organizer buddy, focus on a friend that will help bring out the best in you. Although you certainly want to enjoy working with this person, it’s also important to choose somebody who will not let you get away with excuses. Look for someone who you feel will provide you with the support system you need to stay on track with your organizational goals. A friend who has a similar lifestyle and who is close to your age will usually be a good match. After all, somebody who understands your way of life will be better prepared to help you come up with organizational solutions that will really work. It’s also a good idea to find an organizer buddy who has personality characteristics that you may lack. For example, if you aren’t extremely detail-oriented, a friend who can help you create good to-do lists could be an asset to your organizational plans. However, try not to choose an organizer buddy who has a personality which is drastically different than your own. A true personality clash will not only make working together more difficult, but it will also take a lot of fun out of the process.

Help is a Two-Way Street

When pairing up with an organizer buddy it’s important to remember that the goal is to help each other. Make sure to keep your relationship equitable, offering your friend assistance with their organizational goals just as frequently as they help you with yours. Whenever possible, use a team approach to help each other get the work done faster. Compare your problem areas, and work together to find ways that both of you can get things done more effectively. In some cases, you might want to pair up to get a big job done quickly and enjoyably. In other cases, you might find it more effective to strategize and plan a job with your organizer buddy, then go your separate ways to work on your own homes. The most important part of the process is setting goals together, and providing each other with the support and assistance to accomplish them.
