It is not just another day off from school. Who was Dr. Martin Luther King? What was the origin of Veterans’ Day? Challenge your classmates, students, and colleagues to write down the 50 states or the 43 presidents — or both. Just my vent. Now, how to volunteer.
1. Live by a calendar, which you can get at the dollar store. Write your commitments in it no matter who’s involved.
2. Use your skills first. If your skill is in accounting, publishing, salesmanship, or being a “Dear Abby”, it won’t seem like work at all. But, it will be very much appreciated by the organization.
3. Find the skill you want to learn. If you don’t have computer skills, offer to help out in your child’s class when they go to the computer lab. Kids love to teach others and it helps them learn better. And — you get a free lesson. An hour here and there really adds up and makes it possible for the teachers to maybe spend some time with their kids.
