Hosting Overnight Guests

Spring marks the beginning of the season to travel and no doubt guests will be visiting your house at some point from Spring through Summer.

It’s important to make your guests comfortable and there is no better way to do that then by organizing the guest room.

I like to view guest rooms as hotel rooms. If you have a dedicated room in your house for guests only then it should stay that way. Clean out anything that is stored in the closets or in the dresser of the room. Go through these items, chances are if they have been stored in these closets it’s because you don’t really need them.

The following items are great to keep in the guest bedroom:

Extra hangers in the closet
Fresh flowers on the nightstand
Bedside Carafe – check out www.jonathanadler.com
Alarm Clock
Luggage rack

The guest bathroom should also be well stocked with towels, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion for your guests.

By having an organized room, guests will feel more comfortable and you will feel better knowing the room is ready for a guest at any time!

You must live in a very large house. I live in a terraced and very small house in UK. There is not enough room in the house for storing our belongings without using all the cupboards in all the rooms. We have a fairly minimal lifestyle too and are very far from materialistic. Linen and clothes are stored in this spare bedroom, also my husband’s tapes and our board games which we use often.

You live in unimagined luxury if you can leave empty cupboards and drawers for a guest; you obviously have no idea how other people live!

Thank you for your comment Linda and I love your idea about storing linens and board games in the room, that is a great use of space!

I didn’t mean to offend anyone, my intention for the post was to recommend that people go through their closets and drawers to see if there are unused items. Even if one doesn’t have space, clearing out a drawer temporarily for guests is a great way to make them feel comfortable!

Thank you, Kristen. I appreciate your suggestions. My sister is visiting and I love the idea of the fresh flowers. I often have my stuff piled up…I want to make it nicer for her, so basically, I am going to look at the room as a room that I’d like to stay in. I love reading your suggestions. thanks!
