Project: Unsubscribe

Every morning I wake up and I grab my iPhone from it’s alarm clock and I groan because there are 20+ e-mails of advertisements.  Every single morning.  And I have said ENOUGH.  So next week is project: Unsubscribe.

As my emails are coming in next week I’m going to do one of the following:

Unsubscribe – the ones that are just not interesting, relevant or too frequent.

Establish Rules – To send the ones that I would still want but don’t want in my inbox to a specific folder.  (For example: Gap coupons – do you know how to set up rules?  If you’d like instructions on how to do this leave a comment and I’ll put up a video over the weekend)  This way if I actually NEED to purchase something I can see if there is a recent coupon without being tempted by coupons mid-week.  I’m going to establish another rule for newsletters and informative e-mails that I like to check out periodically.

Mark as Spam – For items that I don’t believe I have ever subscribed to (my need for performance enhancement doesn’t actually exist) I’m going to mark as spam so I’m never bothered by them again.  I don’t even want to try to unsubscribe because I don’t want to catch something from their site.

Will you be joining me in project unsubscribe?  Let me know what you’re using for e-mail and I’ll create a “how to create a rule” video for the different options people list.

I’m with you! Have been doing that slowly this week and it feels GOOD!

Great idea. I am unsubscribing to as much as I can. Unfortunately gmail is not folder based so it is all or nothing. But I feel better already just thinking about fewer emails!

I just did this last night! I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. Plus, I consolidated the blogs that are still of interest into my RSS feed reader, and I actually glanced at all of them this morning. Usually, they just sit in my inbox with their unread status mocking me.

I’ll do it! I’m using Thunderbird.. the new one is swanky.

I have been slowly but surely unsubscribing here and there. I have a folder set up for my family blog, business blogs and subjects. Coupons get sent to a specific folder as well.
I feel so go and uncluttered when I look at my inbox

I’m with you. I *love* seeing I have a new message, and it’s a big downer to find out it’s just schlock.

I started shedding a little while back when I swapped computers & basically sent three email addresses to gmail. What a mess! I’m kind of a sucker for the “sign up for our email newletter” at the till.

I did this about 2 months ago. It was so, ridiculously liberating!

I try to do that more and more often. Actually, I’d love to know where the picture of the toy came from? What a cute stacker/counter/color learning toy.

Hi Mo – You can in gmail setup rules (filters actually) in gmail that send it to ‘labels’ & also say do not display it in your inbox. It’s not completely all or nothing even though there are no true folders.

I think this is a great idea.  Another option (since I have such a hard time saying goodbye) is I created a separate email for all the junk mail.  If I get around to checking it… great.  If not… no sweat because it’s not junking up my regular email with emails I want to make sure I read.  Plus, once in a while those junk emails actually end up being useful for something so I figured I’d let ‘em keep coming but not in a way that inconveniences me!!  Thanks for all the great advice!

Please show how to establish rules. I have the same problem. I get a lot of email that I end up transferring to folders. If I knew how to send them directly to folders, it would be such a time saver and less stress.
