Project: Unsubscribe

Every morning I wake up and I grab my iPhone from it’s alarm clock and I groan because there are 20+ e-mails of advertisements.  Every single morning.  And I have said ENOUGH.  So next week is project: Unsubscribe.

As my emails are coming in next week I’m going to do one of the following:

Unsubscribe – the ones that are just not interesting, relevant or too frequent.

Establish Rules – To send the ones that I would still want but don’t want in my inbox to a specific folder.  (For example: Gap coupons – do you know how to set up rules?  If you’d like instructions on how to do this leave a comment and I’ll put up a video over the weekend)  This way if I actually NEED to purchase something I can see if there is a recent coupon without being tempted by coupons mid-week.  I’m going to establish another rule for newsletters and informative e-mails that I like to check out periodically.

Mark as Spam – For items that I don’t believe I have ever subscribed to (my need for performance enhancement doesn’t actually exist) I’m going to mark as spam so I’m never bothered by them again.  I don’t even want to try to unsubscribe because I don’t want to catch something from their site.

    Great idea. I am unsubscribing to as much as I can. Unfortunately gmail is not folder based so it is all or nothing. But I feel better already just thinking about fewer emails!

    I just did this last night! I felt like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. Plus, I consolidated the blogs that are still of interest into my RSS feed reader, and I actually glanced at all of them this morning. Usually, they just sit in my inbox with their unread status mocking me.

    I have been slowly but surely unsubscribing here and there. I have a folder set up for my family blog, business blogs and subjects. Coupons get sent to a specific folder as well.
    I feel so go and uncluttered when I look at my inbox

    I’m with you. I *love* seeing I have a new message, and it’s a big downer to find out it’s just schlock.

    I started shedding a little while back when I swapped computers & basically sent three email addresses to gmail. What a mess! I’m kind of a sucker for the “sign up for our email newletter” at the till.

    I try to do that more and more often. Actually, I’d love to know where the picture of the toy came from? What a cute stacker/counter/color learning toy.

    Hi Mo – You can in gmail setup rules (filters actually) in gmail that send it to ‘labels’ & also say do not display it in your inbox. It’s not completely all or nothing even though there are no true folders.

    I think this is a great idea.  Another option (since I have such a hard time saying goodbye) is I created a separate email for all the junk mail.  If I get around to checking it… great.  If not… no sweat because it’s not junking up my regular email with emails I want to make sure I read.  Plus, once in a while those junk emails actually end up being useful for something so I figured I’d let ‘em keep coming but not in a way that inconveniences me!!  Thanks for all the great advice!

    Please show how to establish rules. I have the same problem. I get a lot of email that I end up transferring to folders. If I knew how to send them directly to folders, it would be such a time saver and less stress.
